At Securus, together with our partners Expacare and Healix, we have witnessed firsthand how comprehensive international health coverage and emergency medical evacuation services can transform outcomes. Here are just a few real-life examples. --- ## Story 1: A Life Saved from Severe Malaria A 36-year-old employee of a corporate client in Ghana became critically ill with severe malaria while on a business trip to Abidjan. He fell into a coma and was given little chance of survival. With no suitable air ambulance available locally, an ICU-equipped aircraft was flown from Birmingham to evacuate him to Tenerife in the Canary Islands. There, he spent more than 30 days in intensive care before recovering sufficiently to return home to Brazil and spend Christmas with his family. This case demonstrates how comprehensive international health coverage and emergency medical evacuation can truly save lives. The air ambulance alone cost more than £125,000. ## Story 2: Overcoming Borders to Access Critical Care A Syrian construction worker employed by one of our corporate clients in Conakry, Guinea, was critically injured after falling from the third floor of a construction site. His condition required urgent medical evacuation, but international sanctions meant that many countries were unable to accept him for treatment. Switzerland ultimately granted him a special one-month medical visa, allowing him to receive the urgent care he needed. He was evacuated to Switzerland and remained in hospital for two months, with his visa extended until his treatment was completed. Once his condition had stabilized, he was repatriated first to Lebanon and later returned to Conakry, where he was able to resume his work and rebuild his life. ## Story 3: Cardiac Emergency in Ghana A client in Ghana experienced severe chest pain and was admitted to a local hospital. Following an angiogram, doctors confirmed that the hospital did not have the equipment required to treat his condition. As his cardiologist was based in London, a safe transfer had to be arranged.Expacare and Healix flew a UK-based doctor to Accra to personally accompany him on a business-class commercial flight to London. Once there, he underwent the necessary procedure under the care of his treating cardiologist.This case clearly demonstrates how Securus plans go the extra mile.
