Story 1: A Life Saved from Severe Malaria

A 36-year-old employee of a corporate client in Ghana fell critically ill with severe malaria while on a business trip to Abidjan. He was placed in a coma and given only a 5% chance of survival. With no local air ambulance available, an ICU-equipped plane was flown from Birmingham to evacuate him to Tenerife, Canary Islands. There, he spent more than 30 days in intensive care before recovering enough to return home to Brazil and spend Christmas with his family. This case shows how global health cover with emergency evacuation can truly save lives—the air ambulance alone cost over £125,000.

Story 2: Overcoming Borders to Access Care

A Syrian construction worker employed by one of our corporate clients in Conakry, Guinea, suffered a critical fall from the third floor of a site. His condition required urgent evacuation. Due to international sanctions, many countries could not accept him for treatment. Switzerland, however, granted a special one-month medical visa. He was flown to Switzerland, where he received two months of hospital care. His visa was extended until treatment was complete. Once stabilized, he was repatriated first to Lebanon and then back to Conakry—where he was able to resume his work and life.

Cardiac Emergency in Ghana

A client in Ghana experienced severe chest pain and was admitted to a local hospital. After an angiogram, doctors confirmed that they lacked the equipment to treat his condition. His cardiologist was based in London. To ensure safe transfer, Expacare and Healix sent a UK doctor to Accra to personally accompany him on a commercial business-class flight back to London. There, he underwent the required procedure with his treating physician. This is a clear example of how Securus plans go the extra mile.
